Back to School: Better Sleep with Sonno Bed Mattress (2022)

When we were kids, sleep was easy to come by and could be done anywhere. On a chair, in a sleeping bag on cold, hard ground. In the back of a car, a bus, or even standing up.

Unfortunately, with age and stress, our bodies generally require more comfort and support to get a good night’s rest. That is why I’ve been looking at what best mattress reviews recommends when it comes to selecting a new mattress. Whether you’re an executive, a mom, or a college student, getting a good night’s sleep is critically important to maintain balance and good health. This doesn’t always happen, as late-night work demands, sick kids, or last-minute exam studies can push us beyond normal limits. Sleep should be a priority for everyone, as this is what allows us to function properly throughout the day. Without it, everything becomes a lot more difficult. In terms of a new mattress, it may be best to do some research into when to find the best deals on simplyrest.com, as it could be the quality of the mattress that could be causing people to not have a good night’s sleep.

This month, we review three new sleep-related products, that are not only good for your sleep, but they’re also pretty smart, too. First up, the Sonno Bed mattress, and Sonno Bed’s new ‘adjustable’ pillow. Yes, we said adjustable, and not in the way that you might think. Before we continue. According to healthy sleep website mattressinquirer.com, you must have a decent mattress to sleep on to get a quality night’s sleep and this will improve your overall health.

Read on for our full Sonno Bed Mattress and Sonno Pillow review, as well as our Modern Zinc Antimicrobial Smart Sheets review, up next.

SONNO BED MATTRESS

An online-only mattress company, Sonno Bed manufactures foam and latex combination mattresses that are (relatively) easy to flip, with the website stating that you can order with two different levels of firmness – either a medium/firm or medium/soft option.

(Video) How to Pick the Best Mattress, Pillow & Blanket for Better Sleep

We’ve got lots of questions from readers on previous online foam bed reviews, and so we were excited to try out the newly improved Sonno Bed, to see if it lived up to the hype.

Although the website only offers the above mentioned firm combinations, it is worth noting that, if you know what you like, you can order that, too. Knowing how we sleep, we asked if Sonno could accommodate a firm/firm option, and they said yes. Yay, custom options! We’re notorious for that, and it’s nice to know Sonno was willing to so graciously accommodate.

A few weeks later, our mattress came in, and although to the touch, it felt soft, upon putting one’s full body weight on it, the experience changed. Akin to how the top of a marshmallow or a rubber soled shoe will bounce back when pressed, Sonno’s foam and latex combination is one of the most supportive online retail mattresses we’ve tested to date.

Overall we’ve had a good experience with Sonno Bed, and although every brand has its drawbacks, we had very few negatives to say about Sonno Bed.

EDGE CONSTRUCTION

Compared to other online foam mattresses we’ve tested, Sonno Bed performs about average on edge construction. Memory foam beds are, due to what and how they are made, never quite as supportive with their edge construction as a traditional padding and spring bed. Previous beds we’ve tested seemed to provide slightly more edge support, although they sleep quite a bit softer. Choose which is more important to you.

Does higher thread count mean higher quality sheets? Here’s what we found out.

SONNO BED VS. SPRING MATTRESSES

If you’re like those few rare individuals that really need a very firm, or a very soft bed, Sonno Bed may not be what you’re looking for. After all, this is a foam bed. Pure 100% latex mattresses can be quite firm, but you generally will only find these in big box retail shops, and they can be quite costly. Compressed foam, which is what Sonno Bed is primarily composed of, with latex on the top and bottom, will give a bit more-not as much as a Tempur-Pedic memory foam type bed, but more than a very firm spring or 100% latex bed.

Sonno Beds are also made with zero ozone depleteres, PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead and heavy metals, formaldehyde, or phthalates, commonly found in many other mattress manufacturers. They also recycle over 90% of their foam trimmings and materials during production, with the goal of always reducing their carbon footprint.

For the price point and quality (did we mention a 10 year warranty, and a 100 night sleep trial?), Sonno Bed will hold its own against big box competitors.

MOTION TRANSFER

The other thing to note about latex is it’s rubbery, bouncy nature. Although it’s firmer than memory foam alone, it does not do as good of a job mitigating motion transfer. If your partner isn’t a restless sleeper, this isn’t an issue, but if he or she is, you may notice slight movement on the opposite side. Latex tends to share motion when activity occurs across the mattress-as when one gets in and out of bed, not when pressure is applied straight down into the mattress (as with the bowling ball test). This being said, we have a feeling this layer of latex foam will hold up much better for wear vs. either memory foam or a traditional spring mattress.

FOR THINGS OTHER THAN SLEEP

With most other memory foam beds, when used for ‘adult activities’ you’ll usually note somewhat of a sinking feeling. Sonno Bed is more supportive than most other memory foam beds on the market, and provides a comfortable feel, regardless of activities.

Looking for more ways to get a good night’s rest? We’ve got you covered.

SONNO BED SLEEP TRIAL

After approximately 30 nights on our Sonno Bed firm/firm mattress we did not notice trigger point pain, night sweats (memory foam can retain heat), or hip/joint pain as greatly as previously felt on both memory foam and traditional mattresses. Sonno has retained shape, shows no signs of body impressions whatsoever, to date, and has held up well with normal use.

Although latex and foam mattresses rarely need to be flipped, a Sonno Bed mattress will likely last much longer than other mattresses if you turn it over, and rotate it head to foot, at least two to three times a year.

COST, ADDITIONAL FEATURES, AND RATING

In addition to being quite comfortable, the Sonno Bed mattress cover unzips so it can easily be removed and machine washed. Even if you you use a mattress protector like we do, it’s nice to know that you can throw it in the wash, and get rid of any dust bunnies hiding in the corners. Sonno Bed mattresses come with a 10 year warranty, and a 100 night sleep trial, so you can rest easy, knowing you’ve made the right purchase decision.

The average price for a Sonno Bed Queen is $875, and a King, what we tested, is $1025. If you’re considering buying a new mattress to send your new grad off to college, we’d highly recommend Sonno, in part because of their fast shipping, and ease of getting it in to the room. A Twin XL (the standard dorm size) is $680 on their website.

Based on our overall experience, we would rate Sonno Bed 4.5 out of 5 star experience. Our product testing team has already recommended this bed to friends or family-which is more than we can say for many retail brands.

SONNO PILLOW REVIEW

One of our favorite lifestyle products this year is Sonno Bed’s latest, the hypoallergenic ‘adjustable’ Sonno Pillow.

Designed for back, side and stomach sleepers needs, the Sonno Pillow is uniquely adjustable, with an inner zipper to add or remove microfiber, making it easy to customize to your preference of firmness and comfort.

The outer cover is made with a dimpled, soft stretch knit rayon and polyester blend, with a cotton sateen insert. Both the exterior cover and the pillow are machine washable. We found the Sonno Pillow most comfortable with approximately 24% of the filling removed. G

COST AND RATING

Sonno Pillows start at $60 for a standard size. We recommend them for all sleep styles, although those with severe neck problems will probably sleep best using a formed or foam pillow. Our review team gives Sonno Pillow a 4.5 out of 5 stars. Get yours on their website.

Next up is our review of newly funded Kickstarter brand, Modern Zinc antibacterial bedding, created to solve the problem of dirty sheets and bad skin.
